Great Pyrenees Puppies

The Great Pyrenees are considered one of the oldest natural breeds. It is believed to have been around since 3000BC developing around the Pyrenees Mountains.

This large breed has a noble appearance with a thick, double and weather resistant coat. The coat is most plentiful around the neck and shoulders giving the dog the impression of a mane which often more pronounced in males. The coat is all white but may have patches of yellow, gray, or tan. To prevent matting weekly brushings are required. Great Pyrenees tend to shed in large quantities. A breed standard requires the dog to have two dewclaws on both hind legs.

Great Pyrenees have a natural desire to protect their family and home making them excellent guard dogs. Unfortunately this can lead to problems if the dog is housed in urban areas without proper training. Training can be difficult at times for this independent and intelligent breed. This dog must be taught early in life that humans are the pack leader but other wise they are quiet and thoughtful.

These dogs are cautious with strangers and are slow to make friends, but when they do they are life-long friendships. This dog may challenge other dogs attempting to enter their domain. Strong and experienced owners are needed for this large dog. Great Pyrenees do best with large fenced yards.

Socializing this breed at a young age will help prevent aggression. The dog will require obedience training. The Great Pyrenees must be corrected early in life to stop excessive barking and are known to drool. When kept outdoors the breed tends to dig.
