Dachshund Puppies 

Dachshunds are playful, clever and lively and love to be included in all family activities.  Any stubborn tendencies this breed may have can be curbed with obedience training.  Perfect for city or apartment living, this breed is usually cautious with strangers, and get along well with other animals.  House training can sometimes be a challenge with dachshunds, but a diligent owner can work through that. 

The dachshunds body is muscular, strong and straight, with signature short, strong legs.  A narrow head tapers towards the small nose.  Dachshunds come in two sizes – standard and miniature, with three coat styles available: longhaired, smooth and wirehaired. 

The longhaired’s coat is sleek, soft and slightly wavy, longer on the chest and under the neck.  The smooth coat is thick, shiny and short.  The wirehaired coat is coarse, tight and short.  The undercoat should have shorter, softer hairs between the coarse hairs. 

Wirehaired dachshunds also have bushy eyebrows and a beard.  Colors for all three coat types are red, black, brindle gray, chocolate or fawn, sometimes with tan markings. 

Smooth dachshunds should be brushed weekly, while longhaired dachshunds should be brushed every couple of days – daily when shedding.  Wirehairs must be brushed one or two times per week.  Dachshunds enjoy long walks, though are equally happy playing fetch indoors. 

Today’s dachshund is a descendent of a badger hunting dog in medieval Europe.  It was bred to be smaller about a hundred years ago to hunt foxes and rabbits in Germany.  Dachshunds work aggressively when hunting and are not intimidated by their prey.
