Cavaliers are gentle, loving spaniels that make friends with everyone this breed meets.  While sometimes timid with strangers, the sight of an empty lap will bring this breed around.  Cavaliers must be treated gently, though this breed insists on being included in all family activities and show their appreciation with lots of “kisses.”  Cavalier King Charles Spaniels do well in obedience classes and respond very well to praise. 

A Cavalier’s coat is usually moderately long, wavy and very silky.  Colors include ruby, black and tan, Blenheim (white & chestnut) and tri-color (black, tan and white).  This breed’s coat tends to matt easily, so weekly brushings and combings are recommended.  While this type of dog is happy to simply sleep the day away, Cavaliers do appreciate some moderate exercise such as chasing a ball outside or even just in the hallway. 

Cavaliers are sight-hounds, so always walk them on a leash, or this breed attempts to chase down squirrels or other animals.

Named after Charles II, the Cavalier King Charles was originally bred in 17th century England.  While popular as a companion dog, this type of dog is adept small game hunters.
