Yorkies are assertive, energetic and demanding toy dogs, with a big dog attitude. While responsive in obedience training, this breed wants to be in charge at home, and often, larger dogs will defer to them. Generally, this breed gets along well with other animals and children over eight years or so of age. Socializing your Yorkshire terrier from a young age will make the difference.
Yorkies will bark to announce the arrival of strangers making them excellent watchdogs, but it’s simply to alert you, and this type of dog is usually friendly towards people.
A Yorkie’s coat is silky, straight, long, glossy and fine and people tend to either part the hair on their heads or tie it up with bows. The hair on their muzzles is very long and the coat color is steel blue and gold, though puppies are generally black and tan.
Yorkies need to be brushed and combed every day and since this breed will burn up tons of energy running around the house all day, a quick walk around the block a couple of times a day is enough exercise for them.
Originally bred for ratting, Yorkies originated in 19th century England.
