The Shih tzu is thought to have been in existence since 624 AD having been seen in various Chinese tapestries and paintings. The breed whose name means "lion" began its journey to become one of the world's most beloved pets during the 1930's in England and then World War II when U.S. soldiers brought the breed back from the U.K.

The coat of a Shih tzu is long and dense. The coat can be found in any color or color combination. This dog will need daily grooming to prevent mats.

Shih tzus are the ideal family pet: proud and playful. The breed makes wonderful companions for children as well as the elderly. However, some obedience training is recommended to make the Shih tzus an agreeable part of the family.
