English Bulldogs are calm and easy-going dogs that tend to get along with everyone.  This breed is patient and gentle with children and usually gets along well with other dogs and cats.  Due to their relaxed nature this type of dog doesn’t make the best watchdogs, and obedience training to curb stubborn behavior should be started early. 

The English bulldog’s coat is short and soft.  It comes in all color variations except black.  The most common colors are red brindle, brindle, white and fawn. 
English Bulldogs need a quick brushing each week, though the facial and nasal folds should be cleaned more frequently.  Bulldogs are basically sedentary dogs, meaning a walk around the block is generally more than enough exercise for them. 

The original Bulldogs from the early 19th century were bred to be ferocious, tenacious bull-baiting and dog-fighting specimens.  Beginning around the 1830s, when such sports were banned, English Bulldogs were bred to be gentle.
