Basenji

While very friendly with family members and most children, Basenjis can be stubborn and very standoffish with strangers.  The Basenji’s hunting instinct kicks in when it sees a moving car.  These puppies must be leashed at all times or contained in a fenced enclosure to avoid car chasing behavior.  A unique trait of the Basenji is its bark.  It is not a typical bark; Basenjis “yodel” when happy and “scream” when displeased.

Characteristic features of the Basenji include its wrinkled forehead, horse-like gait and tightly curled tail.  Coat colors include red, chestnut, pure black, tri-color and brindle, combined with white tail tip, chest and feet.

Being allowed to play with other dogs each day or being walked vigorously each day with keep a Basenji happy, content and non-destructive.  Grooming is limited to a quick brushing each week as this breed sheds very little.
Basenjis originated in Central Africa thousands of years ago.
