Australian Shepard
While reserved with strangers, Australian Shepards are outgoing, loyal, affectionate and playful with their family. Early socialization with children is recommended. It almost goes without saying that Australian Shepards excel in herding obedience and agility trials.
Their outer coats are somewhat coarse while the under coats tend to be soft and thick. Colors include blue merle, red merle, black or red, with or without white markings with tan points. Males tend to have a more noticeable mane when compared to females.
Weekly brushing, combing and trimming is necessary, especially during the spring shedding period. Australian Shepards are very intelligent and should be kept busy with long runs each day and/or agility sports or they will become destructive.
Originally form Australia where they were used for herding livestock and guarding livestock, they came to North America in the mid 19th century.
